Story

When asked to produce a painting depicting this Spitfire taking off, at night, I was all too eager to capture a feeling of speed and  trepidation. Once the picture had been completed (to illustrate the BBMF brochure 2014 as one of the Spits’ would be wearing this particular colour scheme) I was asked if the pilot depicted in the picture, Anthony Cooper, could see the picture. Obviously, I was a little nervous as I was unsure what he would think of my work. The Spitfire was named “Peter John 1″ after his new born son. Shortly after I sent a copy of the print I received this email

” I was most interested and felt greatly privileged when I was sent an email with an attachment depicting your painting “Out of Darkness”, based on my taking off on my first night D-Day beaches patrol.   It was, I still remember, a pretty exciting time, not only because Spitfires are not the most favourite and easy aircraft to fly at night – narrow undercarriages, dodgy in crosswind landings – but at that time the weather was worse than nasty – pitch black, no horizon and blinding rain !

Somehow, your artistic skill has enabled you to capture the speed and thunderous roar of the take off and even hinting at the tremendous excitement and drama of the great events that were taking place  It is truly a great aviation painting and I shall be delighted and proud to receive a first print, especially if you are kind enough to sign it for me.”

The A4 mounted print measures 400mm x 300mm, A4 framed measures 430mm x 330mm, both are mounted in RAF Blue. This print is also available as an A3 mounted print with hard board backing and measures 500mm x 400mm. The original was sold earlier this year.
